Righteousness Through The Gospel

R. L. Whiteside

There are only two ways a person may be righteous.
  1. To so live as never to sin, or,

  2. Having sinned, to be forgiven — thoroughly cleansed from sin. We can think of the first way, but none of us ever live without sin.
Some plan by which guilty men may become righteous is necessary, or all men are doomed. And that is the very reason the gospel plan of making guilty sinners righteous has been revealed (Rom. 1:16-17). That is the force of Paul's "for" in Romans 1:18 — "For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men."

Then he proceeds to show that all men, both Jew and Gentile, are sinners, and concludes the argument by stating, "But now apart from the law a righteousness of God hath been manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ unto all them that believe; for there is no distinction; for all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God" (Rom. 3:21-23 ASV).

This gospel plan by which sinners may attain to a state of righteousness is our only hope.
