Where In The Bible Will I Find... The Characteristics of The Holy Spirit?

The Holy Spirit is a Divine Being, as are also God and Christ and we should think and speak of Him as such. The New Testament speaks of the Holy Spirit as a personal being, endowed with all the attributes of a person. Please consider the following references to Him and His characteristics in the New Testament. He has a mind. "And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit..." (Rom. 8:27). He has the power of speech. "Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils." (1 Tim. 4:1). He has the power of searching. "But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God." (1 Cor. 2:10). He has the power of knowing. "For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? Even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God." (1 Cor. 2:11). He has the power of forbidding. "Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of Galatia, and were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia." (Acts 16:6). Jesus always spoke to His apostles of the Holy Spirit with personal pronouns, showing them His power to comfort, bless, influence, guide, and reveal the Truth to them (Jn. 14:26) and these things the Holy Spirit did for the Apostles in the First Century. The Holy Spirit guided the Apostles into all Truth (Jn. 16:13). Today we are not directly spoken to or guided by the Holy Spirit, but we are indirectly blessed through the writings of these commissioned men (2 Cor. 5:20). All today have the written word of God to benefit us (Eph. 3:3-5). Let us think of this glorious Being, the Holy Spirit, as a living Person like God and Jesus Christ! |
