Generic And Specific Commands

Generic And Specific Commands
The logic of language requires that the response to specific and generic commands, taken singly or together, differs — in breadth and in focus. "Who can add to God's specific command and then tell God, 'You will be both pleased and 'glorified' by my addition to your authorized, specified commands?'" Josh Haley shows how we discern the difference.

Reevaluation/Reaffirmation Of Elders
Fashion and error are often found together, especially in the church. Jesus rebuked such: "This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men" (Matthew 15:8-9). Dub Mowery scans the scriptures for the truth of God's word on the subject, finds it, and presents it to you.

Justification By Faith Includes Baptism
Is your own thinking too narrow? Do not let the nodding majority compel you nod in agreement with them, that faith is only a belief. James explained that a faith without the component of works is a dead faith (James 2:14-26). C. R. Nichol cites the Old Covenant example of Exodus in his compact minute of meditation: a treat for the lover of the holy Word.

"I'm Saved, But Not A Member Of The Church"
Jerry C. Brewer's short study illustrates how those who make the subject claim are bereft of knowledge and must surely not read the scriptures. Study these 9 references with our editor...

The Confusion Of Denominationalism
Diversity is today a virtue, first driven by political correctness, now diffusing into our social landscape from popular culture. Change agents first capture the language, and then the minds and hearts of the decieved. Diversity is now misconstrued in similar fashion to the quantum mechanical 'relativity.' Chuck Northrop explains how diversity in selecting a part of God's and any of men's directives for salvation, cafeteria-style, abandons all logic, while being out of harmony with scripture and God's will.

The Conversion Of The Elite
Ron Cosby brings the grand story of the eunuch's conversion to our attention. Unlike those who witnessed Jesus' miracles, that "Nevertheless among the chief rulers also many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue: For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God" (John 12:42-43), this elite Ethopian servant found salvation: he heard, repented,1 believed, confessed, and was immersed coming up out of the water. 1This is clear since Philip "preached to him Jesus" (Acts 8:35); for Jesus has commanded men to repent (Luke 13:3-5).

A New Year And A New Beginning
Marvin L. Weir convincingly describes the way to a new beginning: it is through repentance. He urges the reader to place all emphasis on the single most important aspect of life and eternity: where each one of us will spend that future eternity before we succumb to death in this mortal body. "For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality" (I Corinthians 15:53). Yet our immortality will dwell in just one of two destinations, the one which we are choosing now...

The Kingdom Of Heaven
B. C. Goodpasture reviews the scriptures revealing when the kingdom came. Those who continue to await the coming of that kingdom are spiritual kin to those Jews who still await the coming of the messiah. Open your Bible to the record of the coming, then the establishing, and the ongoing encouragement of the kingdom and its members, studying along with our brother. Are you in the kingdom yet?

Inspiration Of The Scripture
A challenge is placed before the "atheists, agnostics, materialists, modernists, evolutionists, and humanists today to simply produce a book better than the Bible." Jesse Whitlock asks if they dare to place their imaginable magnum opus along side the greatest book ever written, to see its wisdom. A brief serving of good food for thought!

A Few Facts About The Final Day
Beware Of Prosperity
A common ailment in our wealthy nation is the distraction from Christian duty which so many find. E. M. Borden gives a brief note of concern, particularly as it pertains to the family. Today's term of 'quality time' should find its definition from God, the source of all wisdom: "And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up" (Deuteronomy 6:6-7).

"Nearer To My Home"
Recently the death rate for this old world of ours was stated to be 30 souls every 10 seconds. Doing the math takes this number from 3 souls per second, to 259,200 a day, or 94,672,800 per year. Jerry C. Brewer loves this old hymn which encourages the faithful to be clock-watchers. As Jesus commanded, "Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh" (Matthew 25:13).
